CHAPTER 18
Just as I expected, Bellamyâs hand drops from my face, and he sinks down onto the edge of his bed. He stares at the floor, not saying a word. I shouldnât be surprised, but his reaction doesnât hurt as much as I feared.
If this were Ryne, Iâd be right next to him, begging him to understand, to love me, to want me. But this isnât Ryne. Itâs Bellamy, and as much as I like him, I donât love him yet. If this is a deal breaker for him, Iâll understand. And I wonât even be angry. How could I blame him for rejecting me? Any other wolf would. Even my own mate did in the end.
He finally glances up at me, and his eyes are a little haunted. âWhat does that mean for us?â
Itâs not the question I was planning to answer. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou could kill me on the full moon.â
âI could, but I can control my lycan form, so Iâm not worried about hurting anyone. And Iâll keep to myself; no wolves will ever see me. Oh, and kissing is off-limits three days before and after.â
âYou know this because of Ryne?â His fists clench on the bedâs comforter.
âYes. Kissing would cause him to pass out.â
His fists clench even harder. âThinking of that bastard kissing you always makes me see red.â
I crease my eyebrows together. âI thought you liked Ryne.â
âI do. Heâs my alpha. But I hate what he did to you, and the thought of you two together kills me. And sometimes . . . sometimes, I think maybe I hate him.â
Unfortunately, I know the feeling.
I know Bell likes me, but to hate his own alpha on my behalf, to call him a bastard? Itâs everything I need at this moment, the kind of validation that I havenât gotten from a man before. Not ever.
And it feels so good.
âTell me something,â Bellamy asks in a low voice. âIf Ryne was willing to be with you even though he knew you were a lycan, what changed?â
I swallow. This I cannot tell. Ryne has kept this from his wolves for good reason. Who knows how theyâll react? Maybe theyâll rise up and kill him for it, or maybe they wonât, but either way, itâs his secret to share when heâs ready.
âWe had a fight about how to handle the Resistance, and he decided that heâd be better off with a luna.â I hate lying to Bell, but itâs close enough to the truth. And honestly, Ryne abandoning me for accidentally biting him isnât fair. He may as well have dumped me for a luna.
Bellamy approaches me again and, to my surprise, slides a hand behind my back, tugging me close to him. He rests his forehead on mine. âYouâre lying. I can tell, but thatâs okay. Iâm guessing youâre hiding something for him. You being a lycan definitely makes things more complicated for us, but I donât care, Poppy. I want you to be mine, and Iâll be there for you, no matter what.
