CHAPTER 18

Just as I expected, Bellamy’s hand drops from my face, and he sinks down onto the edge of his bed. He stares at the floor, not saying a word. I shouldn’t be surprised, but his reaction doesn’t hurt as much as I feared.

If this were Ryne, I’d be right next to him, begging him to understand, to love me, to want me. But this isn’t Ryne. It’s Bellamy, and as much as I like him, I don’t love him yet. If this is a deal breaker for him, I’ll understand. And I won’t even be angry. How could I blame him for rejecting me? Any other wolf would. Even my own mate did in the end.

He finally glances up at me, and his eyes are a little haunted. “What does that mean for us?”

It’s not the question I was planning to answer. “What do you mean?”

“You could kill me on the full moon.”

“I could, but I can control my lycan form, so I’m not worried about hurting anyone. And I’ll keep to myself; no wolves will ever see me. Oh, and kissing is off-limits three days before and after.”

“You know this because of Ryne?” His fists clench on the bed’s comforter.

“Yes. Kissing would cause him to pass out.”

His fists clench even harder. “Thinking of that bastard kissing you always makes me see red.”

I crease my eyebrows together. “I thought you liked Ryne.”

“I do. He’s my alpha. But I hate what he did to you, and the thought of you two together kills me. And sometimes . . . sometimes, I think maybe I hate him.”

Unfortunately, I know the feeling.

I know Bell likes me, but to hate his own alpha on my behalf, to call him a bastard? It’s everything I need at this moment, the kind of validation that I haven’t gotten from a man before. Not ever.

And it feels so good.

“Tell me something,” Bellamy asks in a low voice. “If Ryne was willing to be with you even though he knew you were a lycan, what changed?”

I swallow. This I cannot tell. Ryne has kept this from his wolves for good reason. Who knows how they’ll react? Maybe they’ll rise up and kill him for it, or maybe they won’t, but either way, it’s his secret to share when he’s ready.

“We had a fight about how to handle the Resistance, and he decided that he’d be better off with a luna.” I hate lying to Bell, but it’s close enough to the truth. And honestly, Ryne abandoning me for accidentally biting him isn’t fair. He may as well have dumped me for a luna.

Bellamy approaches me again and, to my surprise, slides a hand behind my back, tugging me close to him. He rests his forehead on mine. “You’re lying. I can tell, but that’s okay. I’m guessing you’re hiding something for him. You being a lycan definitely makes things more complicated for us, but I don’t care, Poppy. I want you to be mine, and I’ll be there for you, no matter what.
